1.)
I believe that the “Mr. Dancelot,” video had more than one central message.  Teachers should engage with their students to make sure they are actually learning the subject(s).  Also, teachers will be unsuccessful when they are strictly lecturing and reading from a powerpoint presentation as their only teaching method.  Mr. Dancelot is clearly an awful teacher.  He wouldn't even allow a student to get out of his seat to see and learn the foot steps for a dance that Mr.Dancelot was teaching.  The teacher just stood infront of the classroom lecturing and reading without letting the students practice or participate.  As a result of his teaching, all of the students are confused and unprepared for the final exam.  I do not agree with Mr. Dancelot’s teaching style whatsoever.  You must engage the students to know that they are learning what is being taught to them.

2.)
Robert makes his thoughts on teaching in the 21st century very clear.  He believes that teaching today should be mainly based on technology.  Teachers can not provide the necessary knowledge students need today by using only pen and paper.  It is all about technology these days.  As teachers, we must use technology to our advantage with engaging students and getting them to start learning!

I think the way teaching is changing is a positive thing.  There are now so many options for learning and teaching through technology.  Teachers should incorporate technology into every lesson plan possible to promote more engagement with the students.  If Mr.  Robert is correct, then I must increase my knowledge with teaching using the many tools of technology.  I will try to incorporate technology in fun ways for learning and having the information stick!

2.)
The type of learning style showed in “the Networked Student,” is similar to the learning/teaching style in EDM310.  There is so much independent learning done through the use of technology.  The teachers do not lecture, but engage you with independent assignments.  This was the first time I have heard the term “ connectivism,” but after watching the video I now have better understanding of the term.  I absolutely believe having a teacher is still a necessity for a networking student.  Teachers are there to steer students in the right direction, help them with problems when they are stuck, show them how to properly turn in assignments and write to certain people, and they also show them how to manage a network properly, which seems to be most important with a networking student.  

3.)
The thesis statement of Davis’ video, “Harness your Students’ Digital Smarts,”  is to empower students to share with one another.  Davis gets her students to work together to connect and expand their field of learning.  Having the students look up unfamiliar terms is a good tool for getting them to think and not relying 100% on the teacher.  Figuring out problems on your own can give you a feeling of accomplishment an empowerment that can keep a students motivated.
4.)
Elementary students are definitely ahead of the race!  By a long shot.  Myself being an undergraduate student,  I am behind in the race.  I just learned how to create and write a blog one week ago and third graders are doing this daily.  

5.)
Flipping the classroom approach is new to me.  This video was the first time I had ever heard of it.  I believe this approach could definitely be useful as a teacher. This could allow for my students to be well prepared on the lesson before coming to class, which will make the student more confident about his/her work.  Students could also have questions ready to ask the following day about the lesson.  I believe this approach could also benefit my teaching by making the students think greater with technology.  

6.)
After reading, “Bringing the Locker Room into the Classroom,”  the main advice I got towards teaching was the importance of teamwork.  I should focus more on the students sharing information and working together to learn more effectively.

Blog Post #1


I met with one of the education advisors prior to this semester, and that was when I first heard a brief description of the EDM310 course.  Even the advisors told me that it was a very difficult class and to prepare myself. This of course raised my anxiety to new heights! Especially since I’m not the most tech savvy person.  Going in, I was feeling intimidated and scared of what to expect.  It didn't help that I have heard from so many other students that they could not pass the first time taking the course.  I did appreciate how Mr. Tashbin talked to the class and explained how they are all here to help us and want us to succeed.  Tashbin did help calm my nerves about the entire course.  I can tell EDM310 will be different from other classes that I have taken.  One way being that I have never taken a course which did not require me to take quizzes or tests.  Also, it seems to be a lot of independent teaching and learning which makes me feel uneasy.  The last computer course I took was your basic CIS class, which gave me step by step instructions on my assignments.  This is definitely not the teaching format for EDM310 , which may benefit me in the long run.  I think my biggest difficulties in this class will be learning how to use the technology in the appropriate way to complete my work on time.  Also, the time required to be successful in this course may be difficult considering all of the other courses I am taking this semester.  I believe the best way to approach my difficulties would be for me not to become so frustrated with technology (which Iv had problems with),  and to manage my time more appropriately to pass this course. Getting my work submitted on time will also help my difficulties.  These things are important, but the best tool to tackle my difficulties would be to not hesitate to ask for help.  Since it is only the first week of class, I do not have any questions, but I can assure you that I will! I just hope the instructors can teach the class the steps to completing the assignments in an understanding manner.  Especially since everyone is not on the same learning level when it comes to technology.

Hi everyone!

My name is Erika Owen and I am a junior at the University of South Alabama.  I’m 21 years old, but I will be 22 in June.  I grew up in Chickasaw, but when I was twelve my mother, sister, and I moved to Mobile and I have lived here ever since. I hope to move somewhere far away when the time is right.  Alabama has been a nice place to live and grow up in, but I don’t wish to be here forever.  I’m neither married nor do I have any children.  Although I hope to in a couple of years.  I love music and animals probably more than anything. I also enjoy  music festivals! I have a cat and a hedgehog of my own.  They get along believe it or not.  I currently work at Bath & Body Works in the Bel Air Mall.  I actually have a lot of fun working there. I graduated from Faulkner State Community College last year with an associates in science.   The transition from Faulkner to USA as been quite different.  Originally, I was going to school for speech science, but had a change of heart.

I decided a few months ago to change my major to elementary education for a number of reasons.  One being the impact I can make on children’s lives.  I have always enjoyed being around kids, and being able to help them learn and mold their minds would be awesome.  Especially if I can do it in fun creative ways!  Another reason I chose to pursue a degree in elementary education is I think my personality, caring instinct, and skills learned here at USA will make me an excellent future elementary school teacher.  I also like the scheduling and the energy in the classroom.  I know I will learn useful strategies and skills in EDM310 that will be beneficial for my future students and overwhelmingly rewarding in this day in time.  Ultimately because technology is so widely used in the teaching world or just the world in general and is increasing everyday. Taking a multimedia approach to kids can keep them interested and learning at the same time.
